The End of Carl Summers

From a distance the neighbor thought Jackie was just enjoying a midday swim around the lillipads that almost covered every square cubic litre of the surface of the pond. She saw Jackie float, then dive into the water, the last thing visible covered by pants. Now the neighbor thought it was a bit odd to swim in dungarees at this time of year, but admired the girls modesty.

What the neighbor couldn't know was as she sipped her lemonade, with its secret shot of bourbon was that Jackie was diving deep down into the water, her eyes squeezed shut and her lungs about to burst, while she felt along the mucky bottom for the knife she had used to kill Carl Summers.

But all she managed to do was embed the silt from the bottom of the pond so deep under her fingernails that she'd have to take a toothpick from the drawer in the pantry and scrape the dirt out. The dirt was deep and her lungs kept failing her, but she kept on clawing and diving and praying.
