I never read Cody's blog or her book. When it comes to what's hip in the blogging world and what isn't I haven't a clue. I read very few websites with any sort of dedication and the one I do read is so embarassing to me that I actually remove it from my browser history right along with the other stuff no one wants other people possibly looking at.
That being said I didn't know she started out as a blogger until 2011 via this post on Wired that was first posted in 2007. I thought Juno was meeh. I have a love-hate thing with Michael Cera. I can't explain what I love and what I hate about him. He brings both sentiments out of me simultaneously. I didn't see Jennifer's Body for the obvious reasons. Then I stumbled upon United States of Tara's Season 3 premiere episode. I have caught up now. The show is brilliant.
So she started as a blogger. It's the old new thing. What I'm more concerned about is me. I've been blogging for years. I've been in magazines. I've been paid to blog even. I even got sort of discovered and worked on a book for someone else. I want to be a successful author. I have some theories as to why it's not happening (mostly because I haven't written anything, submitted anything, or really tried), but dreaming about what could happen keeps me going.
What kind of writer I would ideally be is one who writes books that make money, but still rides the fence betyween being commercial and being considered literature or is literature but somehow still makes money. I can't help it. Ever since someone told me that Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" sells 250,000 copies a year that's what I wanted. To write something good enough that it remains in print because of demand. And continues to earn royalties. Gotta save up for all those pairs of granny panties I'll need one day.
But then I realise I have to write Catcher in the Rye or The Great Gatsby or something equivalent. And then the panic sets in and the doubt and the hours of finding anything else to do because the one thing I want to do, which is to write, is the one thing I can't seem to do.
Stephen King doesn't believe in writer's block. I do. It's worse than PMS. It is not cured with chocolate, headache pills, or a hot water bottle and can last months.
So today I am inspired by Diablo Cody. She's younger than me, far more successful, and regardless of what anyone else may say I think she is extremely talented. Plus she's got lady parts and if there's one thing women writers shouldn't be doing is slagging off the ladies in the industry who get their benjamins. They pave the way for us all.
P.S. Toni Colette better be winning awards for her work on US of Tara.
